Describe your workout regimen.
Sporadic. Sometimes I walk, jog or swim if lanes are available. I also use the elliptical machine, treadmill, bicycle, etc. I do strength training at Fitness Together once or twice per week and do a boot camp class at Anytime Fitness twice a week. I may work out at 5 a.m. or 10 p.m., depending on my schedule.
Do you work out with a partner or a group or alone? Why?
Once or twice per week at best with others, but since my schedule varies so much, I usually work out alone.
How have you changed that regimen over the years?
I was athletic my whole life, but quit working out in January 1998. It was the dumbest thing I have ever done. Before that, I swam several times per week and competed in masters swimming meets, and I ran 3-5 times per week, participating in 5, 10 and 20K races for kicks. But since I did almost nothing for 10 years, the new regimen is actually working out consistently.
Do you set small goals and reward yourself for reaching them? How?
I don’t set small goals but do celebrate milestones such as weight loss and reduced pants sizes with people close to me, who are so supportive of my efforts.
What motivates you to stay in shape?
I was headed down the wrong path toward health issues. I want to live longer and feel better. I think God still has several items on my to-do list, and I need all the time I can get.
What are the keys to your diet?
Better choices as to what I eat — lean meats, fruits and vegetables and less bad carbs. Eat less. Pretty simple, but effective.
What advice would you give to someone just starting on a workout program?
Start slow and stick with it. The Olympics are coming up, but realize that you are not going to make the team, so don’t try to work out like you are.
Any fitness goals you’re working toward?
Another 30 pounds and Fittest Exec in 2010, not just the most improved. Watch your back, boys; I’m coming for the title!
