Describe your workout regimen.
My workout regimen will vary throughout the year. In the summer, I am usually doing some competitive running (track meets and 5Ks), so I run five days a week, with distances anywhere from five miles to sprints on the track. I will strength train at Gold’s Gym twice a week during my competitive running season. In the winter, I focus on strength training for the most part, going to Gold’s four times a week, mixing in some running about twice a week.
How have you changed that regimen over the years?
My training regimen hasn’t changed a lot over the years. If anything, I like to think I have gotten a bit smarter in the way that I train, like listening to my body in order to prevent injuries.
Do you set small goals and reward yourself for reaching them? How?
I am a huge fan of goal setting. My training is almost always geared toward reaching a goal I have set for myself. For instance, during the summer, I have a number of races I will compete in, so each week I want to make progress in order to either place well or improve my time at a certain distance. When strength training is my focus, I seek to improve strength in certain areas and reach strength goals I have set for myself. The reward is meeting those goals and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it.
Do you work out with a partner or a group or alone? Why?
I work out alone and always have. I am very self-motivated and compete with myself each time I work out. I also like to be able to tailor my workouts to my own body and training needs.
What are the keys to your diet?
I am a portion-control and frequency-meal type of individual: smaller portions, more meals per day. This along with being cognizant of the types of foods you put into your body can make a world of difference. I allow myself to eat some “not so healthy” foods just like anyone else may; however, I make sure to eat these types of foods in moderation. For the most part, I look at food as fuel. I eat to live, rather than living to eat, as they say!
What advice would you give to someone starting on a workout program?
Start simple; it doesn’t happen all at once. You must be persistent also. On that day that you just plain don’t feel like getting to the gym or going out for that run, just go do it. It’s amazing how good you will feel once you are done, to know that you didn’t want to do it but yet you went out and did it anyway. The better shape you get in, the more motivated you will become to push yourself further, and before you know it, you won’t know how you lived without it.
