The Des Moines City Council is being asked to consider the first increase in fees in six years for parking in the seven city-owned ramps. City Traffic Engineer Jennifer McCoy told the council Monday morning that parking ramp revenues have declined since 2010 and do not generate enough funds to pay for maintenance and new construction. A proposal would generate an additional $150,000 per year by increasing fees for the first two hours of parking by 50 cents an hour to $2; increasing the nightly flat-rate that is charged from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. by 50 cents to $4.50 an hour; increase the Court District fee that is charged after 4 p.m. on Saturdays at the Fifth and Walnut, Third and Court and Fourth and Grand ramps to $5 from $3; and increase the pre-paid special event fee to $10 from $5. An ordinance incorporating the changes could be brought to the council on May 4.
