Neumann Monson Architects has received a COTE Top Ten Award from the American Institute of Architects – the industry’s highest award for sustainable design excellence – for the design of Market One, an adaptive reuse of a historic building in Des Moines. “Market One survived decades of urban decay to be transformed into the vibrant anchor of a redeveloping neighborhood,” Channing Swanson, a partner at Neumann Monson Architects, said in a prepared statement. “The former threshing machine factory now marries the seemingly contradictory efforts of energy efficiency and modern comfort systems with the utilization of state and federal tax credits for historic preservation to become commercial office space.” Neumann Monson Architects has offices in Des Moines and Iowa City. Market One, located at 130 E. Third St., relies on geothermal and solar energy to achieve a 75% reduction in energy use in the 54,000-square-foot office building. The redesign of the building was completed in 2014. Since then, the project has won several awards including the 2018 AIA Iowa Craft Award; it received a first place in the ASHRAE National Technology Awards. The building currently houses Blackbird Investments’ headquarters.
