Williams said no one sought permission to use the mural, and Hy-Vee did not give him credit or compensation. The federal lawsuit seeks $25,000 and claims the commercial use of the mural could damage William’s art business, which seeks to avoid “corporate culture.” In a letter to Williams’ attorney, Hy-Vee representatives claimed the use of the mural falls under fair use laws and was a small piece of the overall commercial.
