The Des Moines Children’s Museum announced today it will relocate from Valley West Mall to a new location at the former site of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club where the nonprofit plans to expand. The nonprofit has launched a $3.5 million capital campaign, “From Love to Legacy,” to purchase and renovate the building and create new interactive exhibits, according to a news release. The campaign has raised $2.3 million so far and is co-chaired by Carolyn Ruan and Brittainey Lauridsen. The museum’s move comes as the mall could soon change hands with a buyer currently under contract. The museum has been at the mall since 2017, but a permanent home has been a goal of the organization, the release said. The new location, at 1200 12th St. in West Des Moines, includes around 26,000 square feet and more than seven acres of outdoor space. It plans to open to the public in spring 2026. “Our community’s support has fueled this growth, and now we are turning that love into a legacy for future generations,” Julie Burtnette, the museum’s executive director and co-founder said in a prepared statement.
