Based on a survey of social media use in U.S. cities, Men’s Health magazine recently named Des Moines as one of the most “socially networked” towns in America.

Coming in at No. 42, Des Moines was ranked below some other Midwestern cities such as Chicago, Minneapolis and St. Louis, but ahead of Kansas City, Omaha and Wichita, Kan.

After calculating the number of Facebook and LinkedIn users per capita, the overall usage of Twitter in U.S. towns and the amount of traffic generated by social networking websites such as www.Reddit.com and www.Digg.com, Men’s Health published its results online on March 7.

Receiving a “C+” for social connectivity, Des Moines ranked higher than New York City. Washington, D.C., “a city where staying connected can get out the vote, and virtual handshakes help shape our nation,” the magazine said, was ranked No. 1 in the country.
