Finance and insurance employees in the Des Moines metropolitan area earn an average of $66,000 per year, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau compiled by BizJournals.com.

That number ranks No. 34 out of 115 metro areas that contain at least 10,000 private-sector businesses in all industries.

The average salary for employees in the 115 metro areas was $88,400. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., metro was the top market, where employees earned an average of $238,400 per year. Numbers are based of 2010 data, the latest available.
