Des Moines receives $5 million from Housing and Urban Development
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development accepted Iowa’s plan for the use of $84 million awarded by the Disaster Recovery Enhancement Fund. Iowa was awarded the largest portion of the $312 million given out to 13 states to help finance flood mitigation efforts.
The city of Des Moines received $5 million under the plan, with about $2 million being used to install a new storm water pump at Southeast Fourth and Shaw streets and approximately $3 million going toward sewer lining projects. The pump station will be designed to provide better flood protection, by removing the need to rely on portable pumps, according to a city news release.
Other recipients include:
• The city of Cedar Rapids received $27 million for six projects.
• The city of Iowa City received $15 million for three projects.
• The city of Coralville received $5 million for storm drainage improvements and new floodwalls, berms and pump stations along Clear Creek and Biscuit Creek.
• Black Hawk County received $2.9 million to replace a rail and trail bridge.
• The city of Creston received $1.3 million to replace the spillway at Summit Lake.
• The city of Columbus Junction received $695,000 to improve levees along the Iowa River.
• Louisa County received $420,000 to establish a new 2-mile open ditch system.
