The Des Moines Register has named the finalists for its 13th annual Star and Aurora awards, the newspaper announced Friday. The Iowa Star Award honors individuals who work to promote self-sufficiency and improve the lives of the most vulnerable. The finalists are Milton Cole Duvall, a West Des Moines school board member and civil rights advocate; Connie Wimer, the founder of Business Publications Corp. Inc.; and Karen Devore, a retired social worker. The Aurora Award recognizes a nonprofit organization that has identified a need within the community and has worked to find a solution. The finalists are Joppa Outreach, Urban Dreams and Youth Emergency Services & Shelter.
