Des Moines sets goals, meetings for PlanDSM

The city of Des Moines has released its draft goals and policies as part of the PlanDSM work to guide the future of the city.

One of the more interesting elements surrounds land use. Developers have pushed for more flexible codes and guidelines to promote more development both downtown and in the neighborhoods.

Some developers have suggested that the low-income neighborhoods surrounding downtown would be good areas for redevelopment if the city will allow a mix of multifamily and single family construction. The draft of the land use section of the new plan seems to nod to that discussion by calling for development standards that “provide for a mixture of land uses, mandate protection of natural resources and promote flexible approaches to implementing the plan.”

In the section on community character and neighborhoods, a draft policy states that the city should “ensure a diverse mix of housing types, styles, scales, density and affordability that complement existing neighborhood character.”

It should be an interesting debate on codes and zoning.

Speaking of which, you have a chance to comment at several public meetings in the near future. All sessions are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The meetings are Tuesday at Polk County River Place, Wednesday at Central Library; and Oct. 6 at Richard A. Clark Municipal Service Center. Read more
