Des Moines workers: Job stability most important value
Last Saturday, thousands of workers from across Iowa came out to support Workshift, a national good jobs campaign focused on engaging Americans to set a new people-driven standard for good jobs, and interacted with an art installation at the Iowa State Fair. The interactive installation — in which people dropped a ball into a plexiglass case to select from among four values — helped Iowans define what a “good job” is in America today. The message from Des Moines’ workers was clear: When choosing among stability, flexibility, opportunity and pride, the most important value to them is stability. Fairgoers, among them Courtney Greene, communications director at Iowa Workforce Development, also shared their stories. “The same week I was terminated from my job, my ex-husband was also laid off,” said Greene, a single mother of two daughters. “My daughter told me that that week at school, her teacher asked her what her parents did in front of her peers and the whole class. How could she say that both of her parents were unemployed? It broke my heart knowing that. Fortunately, I have a new job and will have more stability.” Workshift said that employers and government should develop policies that create jobs based upon these values.
