The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is offering to help local drinking water supplies test for a toxin from blue-green algae capable of causing intestinal illness. The program is voluntary and begins July 11. The toxin, microcystin, can also sicken pets and other animals. The $250,000 program will pay for testing for up to a year.
