The Iowa Insurance Division is reminding Iowans to read and understand the coverage that their homeowners and flood insurance policies provide, as temperatures begin to warm up and there is potential for rapid melting of accumulated snow. “Water and sewer backup coverage is different than flood insurance,” Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said in a release. “While some homeowners policies include the provisions, neither are automatically included as part of a regular homeowners policy. Typically, there is a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance takes effect. Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program and can be purchased through many licensed property insurance agents. The agency has a search tool for finding licensed agents here.
