DuPont marks opening of Nevada cellulosic ethanol plant
DuPont Co. officially opened its cellulosic biofuel facility in Nevada today. The company bills the biorefinery as the world’s largest cellulosic ethanol plant, with a production capacity of 30 million gallons a year. The plant, which makes ethanol from cornstalks, corn leaves and corncobs, should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent compared with gasoline, DuPont reported. It is one of the few commercial-scale attempts to turn something other than corn into fuel. Nearly 500 local farmers will provide the materials, and the plant provides 85 full-time jobs and 150 seasonal positions. Read more
