Andrew and Teri TeBockhorst, who closed their East Village Books last month, filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday in Des Moines.

The TeBockhorsts shuttered the shop at 510 E. Locust St. on Sept. 29 and delivered the news to customers via the store’s Web site, saying that they could not secure the continued financing they needed to operate the business.

Teri TeBockhorst founded the boutique bookstore as the fulfillment of a dream. It opened in October 2007.

The TeBockhorsts claim more than $1 million in debts in the Chapter 7 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Des Moines.

According to the bankruptcy filing, the TeBockhorsts have $760,642 in assets, a current monthly income of $5,956 and monthly personal expenses of $5,744.

Debts owed to more than 90 businesses include $460,000 in business and operating loans from VisionBank of Iowa in West Des Moines; $387,750 in lease agreements with Ladco Development Inc., owner of the building in which the bookstore was located, with $25,000 of that amount in dispute; $9,000 due on two credit cards used by the bookstore; and $25,000 in personal guarantees on the business to Ladco-owned Ball Construction Services LLC.

Under the filing, a trustee will be appointed to liquidate certain assets to pay some debts. The trustee also can decide to discharge some debts.

Teri TeBockhorst said she could not discuss the bankruptcy case. Her attorney, David Morse, could not be reached for comment.
