The family of local activist and rapper William Holmes, known more commonly as Will Keeps, said he is in serious but stable condition in a hospital following Monday’s shooting at the Des Moines nonprofit that he leads. Two students were killed in the shooting, which police have said was targeted gang violence. Police released the names of the victims this afternoon: 18-year-old Gionni Dameron and 16-year-old Rashad Carr. “We want to thank everyone for their prayers and outpouring of support for Will and the students involved in this tragedy,” Keeps’ family said in a media statement sent around 2:30 p.m. today. “Will is currently in serious, but stable condition. He has a long recovery ahead and we are deeply appreciative for the care he is receiving. Even though Will is severely injured, he is now more determined than ever to continue with his work with at-risk youth and looks forward to, once again, working hand-in-hand with other community leaders on the mission of Starts Right Here. We ask for your continued prayers for everyone involved in this tragedy.” The nonprofit Starts Right Here, founded by Keeps, provides mentorship to disadvantaged youths.
