FDA initiative aims to reduce prescription painkiller abuse
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered manufacturers of painkilling drugs to provide educational materials to help train physicians about the correct use of the drugs, the agency announced Tuesday. The initiative is part of the Obama administration’s plan to tackle prescription drug abuse. The documents will be prepared by the drugmakers, but the FDA will approve them before they are implemented, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said at a news conference. Prescription drug abuse was the second-biggest cause of accidental deaths in 2007.
