February overall a good month for Iowa stocks

Fourteen of 21 Iowa-based companies posted stock price gains for the month of February. Seven posted losses. 

Six companies posted double-digit percentage gains. The top three were Workiva Inc. with an 18.02 percent gain, Winnebago Industries Inc. with a 14.09 percent gain and NewLink Genetics Corp. with a 13.42 percent gain.

The seven companies that were down in February were: Flexsteel Industries Inc., FBL Financial Group, HNI Corp., EMC Insurance Group Inc., United Fire Group Inc., Renewable Energy Group Inc. and KemPharm Inc.

Arkansas-based Windstream Holdings Inc., which has operations in Iowa, had the biggest drop as a result of recently losing a legal battle and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Windstream was delisted from the Nasdaq at the opening of trading today.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 21 Iowa-based public companies, increased by 3.79 percent from January and was down 7.84 percent on a year-over-year basis. 

By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 3.67 percent during the month and increased 3.54 percent from a year ago. The Nasdaq composite gained 3.44 percent during the month and increased 3.57 percent from a year ago. 

The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
