The city of Des Moines will receive a $2.5 million federal grant to pay the salaries and benefits of 13 new firefighters over a two-year period, according to a release. The federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant does not require local matching funds and does not bind the city to keep the firefighters on staff for more than the two-year period covered by the grant. The firefighter positions had been eliminated through previous budget reductions.
