Fighting to bring women in history to Central Park
The New York Times: Coline Jenkins, the great-great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, is on a campaign to overthrow what she calls the bronze patriarchy in Central Park. Of the 22 statues of historical figures in Central Park, all are men. Of the roughly 800 permanent sculptures in New York City’s parks system, about 100 or so represent historical figures and only a few are women, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Joan of Arc, both in Riverside Park. However, Jenkins is marking a first step toward equality. In May, the parks department granted conceptual approval to erecting a statue dedicated to Stanton and fellow women’s suffrage activist Susan B.
