Firm wins engineering award for trail and bridge
Snyder & Associates Inc., of Ankeny, took home the Grand Conceptor award from the Engineering Excellence Awards this weekend, the highest honor from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa (ACEC).
The company won for its design for the High Trestle Trail and bridge in Madrid. The bridge, which is colorfully lit at night, is a half-mile long and 13 stories above the Des Moines River. The bridge and trail have increased bicycle tourism in the area. In a release, ACEC said it was impressed by the firm’s ability to overcome challenges, like getting multiple governments to work together on funding.
The biggest challenge, ACEC said, was designing the bridge to accomodate for the fact that it runs over an area of the Des Moines River that is also the Saylorville Reservoir, meaning the river level and width can change significantly. ACEC gave awards in five categories.
