Hubbell Realty Co. has completed its sale of the former Riverfront YMCA at 101 Locust St. to the federal government. A warranty deed sealing the deal was signed Friday and filed today with the Polk County recorder. The purchase price was $6,487,173. Filing the deed brings an end to private efforts to develop what many people believed was the prize piece of development property in the state, and certainly in the city of Des Moines. The federal government picked the site for construction of a $140 million federal courthouse in 2017 and would not let go of that notion, repeating its preference late this summer. At the time of the second announcement, Hubbell was unveiling plans for a luxury condominium project at the site. Hubbell bought the property for nearly $4.8 million from the YMCA of Greater Des Moines in October 2016. Hubbell said it would fight GSA efforts to acquire the site, but eventually yielded to the fact that the government agency would have little difficulty obtaining the 1.8-acre property through eminent domain.
