Fuel prices keep sliding
Fuel prices have fallen for the sixth day in a row, CNNMoney.com reported. And according to a nationwide survey conducted by AAA, prices for gasoline, diesel and ethanol have all retreated.
The average price for a gallon of regular gas fell more than a penny from yesterday to $4.042 a gallon, down from $4.055. This decline comes a week after gas prices hit a record high of $4.114 last Wednesday and held that price through Thursday.
Even ethanol prices have declined. The price of 85 percent ethanol blended fuel fell 2.4 cents to an average of $3.259 a gallon.
Diesel prices, however, fell only slightly. According to AAA the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel fell from $4.808 to $4.802. Diesel remains more than 62 percent higher than last year, when it was cheaper than gas.
But despite the average declines in prices, not all states are reaping the benefits. For instance, gas prices in Alaska – the state with the highest prices – rose 2.5 cents to $4.689 a gallon from $4.664 the day before. Hawaii also saw an increase in the price of gas that brought its new average to $4.479 a gallon.
Gas prices generally lag behind oil prices, but last week, crude oil prices dropped more than $16 dollars a barrel in response to concerns that soaring fuel prices were cutting into demand.
Over the last 12 months, the price of oil has risen more than 72 percent.
