The 10-cent increase in the state’s gasoline tax this year will mean a record $700 million in construction on state and interstate highways, The Des Moines Register reported. Get ready for lots of construction zones, and drive carefully. Statewide, the DOT expects to establish up to 500 work zones from now until the end of the road construction season in November. In the Des Moines area, this will be the final year of a $45 million project to reconstruct the interchange of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 65 at Altoona. On Interstate 35 in Warren County, work crews will construct some traffic lanes on a new alignment, build a new interchange at Iowa Highway 92 and construct new bridges over Badger Creek and the North River.
