Gotcha! Traffic camera fines doubled in December 

The City of Des Moines continued to lighten the wallets of speeders and red-light runners last month, collecting fines totaling $270,866 from more than 4,100 citations. According to a press release, the dollar amount of fines collected was more than double the $130,257 the city collected in November. Of the 4,153 citations issued, two-thirds were from the Interstate 235 cameras, 18 percent were from the mobile speed camera and the remainder were caught by the five red-light cameras. Since the city began using the camera system in August, it has netted $375,770 in revenue from the fines collected.
