The Great Ape Trust is losing its funder, as Ted Townsend announced his financial support will end at the end of the year, but has been working to gain new funding, a spokesman said.

Al Setka, director of communications for the organization, said the loss of Townsend’s funding was no surprise, as the trust was informed “12 or 18 months ago” of the decision, and has been seeking long-term funding from more traditional sources such as foundations, granting institutions and educational institutions.

The trust is confident that funding will come through close to the end of 2012, he said. In the meantime, the trust is seeking bridge funding of around $500,000, and has identified potential donors.

Setka said that Townsend’s funding, which began when he announced plans for the center in 2002, was never intended to continue indefinitely.
