Have you always lived in Iowa?

I have lived In Iowa since April 2003. I lived in St. Louis, Mo., for three years. I moved to St. Louis in 2000.

What brought you to Iowa?

I moved with Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I was promoted to group rental manager with responsibility for Iowa and western Illinois rental operations.

What is your career background?

My background is in sales and operations management, with a strong emphasis in customer service.

How did you come to work with United Way?

I have known about United Way for many years and I have actually led campaigns for Enterprise in the past, but I was made aware of this position through a common connection.

How has your switch from corporate to nonprofit been?

Nonprofit is about relationships, and for-profits are about relationships. The transition has been surprisingly easy so far. I am anxious to get out in the community and meet with community leaders and really get engaged.

What are some of your first tasks in your new position?

The first things I have already started doing are understanding the mechanics of the actual campaign drive and understanding the organizational chart of who is assigned to what. And at this point, I am also identifying who is on the affinity group side, such as our Tocqueville Society members, who are our $10,000-plus contributors, as well as our Women’s Leadership Connection and Emerging Leaders Initiative.

What will your main role be?

My primary responsibilities are resource development for the United Way organization as it relates to the traditional campaign drive, as well as affinity groups. The third component in that overall resource development picture is the private contribution area of fund raising, which will come in time. It is not a primary focus this calendar year, but in going into next year. I am going to be working with community leaders on planned will giving, gift annuity strategies, long-term sustainable resource strategies.

What are you anticipating most about your new position?

Clearly, the impact that my work is going to have on improving the lives of other people in the community, especially the areas of income, health and education. I had led campaigns in years past while at Enterprise, but I really did not have the deep sense of appreciation for the actual work that is done with the dollars that are raised. United Way doesn’t just look to address concerns and opportunities within the community, but they look to provide lasting, systemic change.

How did you make your first dollar?

I cut lawns and stained a barn. I started working when I was 12.

What is your career experience?

I graduated from Capital University in Ohio, and my major was in business administration, with a minor in public speaking. I worked two part-time jobs all through college. It was John Deere (& Co.), I was a forklift operator and I was a waiter at (a) country club on the weekends. Following graduation, I started with Enterprise in 1991 and worked my way from a management trainee up to group rental management over the course of 16 years.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have four kids and that is my spare time. I play basketball, attend sporting events. I am a musician; I used to play in a band (called Palomar) years and years ago. I enjoy playing guitar and keyboard. Aside from that, I coach basketball; I coach soccer. I have done a lot of coaching, a lot of kid-related activities. I have always been an Ohio State Buckeye fan. I grew up in Columbus Ohio, so I didn’t have a choice.
