Half an old ‘Y’ might be better than none
Des Moines city officials have recommended that the lower portion of the former YWCA at 717 Grand Ave. should be spared the wrecking ball and that demolition should be limited to the upper floors. The City Council will be asked today to reject bids for demolishing the entire structure because they exceeded estimates by about $550,000. According to a council memo, saving the lower portion of the structure will save about $800,000. The lowest bid to tear down the entire building was about $2.2 million, submitted by Metro Demolition Inc. The city engineer’s office had estimated the cost at $1.65 million.
