Hy-Vee Inc. is poised to break ground on its first phase of development at the Crossing at Alice’s Road in Waukee.

Beginning this spring, the grocery store chain plans to construct a 4,360-square-foot Hy-Vee Gas convenience store with 16 fueling stations and a 3,700-square-foot car wash on the 13.46-acre site it acquired from Knapp Properties Inc. in 2008. The address of the convenience store will be 1025 E. Hickman Road.

South of that building, the company plans to eventually construct an 87,240-square-foot supermarket, which, as is typical of its newer operations in other communities, will feature a Caribou Coffee shop, a pharmacy and a garden center. City records indicated that the store could be expanded by up to 26,150 square feet in the future.

On Feb. 8, the Planning & Zoning Commission recommended that the City Council approve the proposed site plan. The address will be 1005 E. Hickman Road.
