West Des Moines-based grocer Hy-Vee Inc. plans to donate $500,000 to help pay for improvements to Indian Hills Community College’s campuses in Ottumwa and Centerville. The announcement of the donation comes after voters this month approved a $28 million bond referendum to pay for a new campus in Centerville and major improvements to the Ottumwa campus. Indian Hills provides people who work at Hy-Vee’s Chariton Distribution Center the opportunity to attend training, take classes and advance their careers while staying close to home. Hy-Vee employees have received CDL training, taken leadership and management courses, as well as English language learning courses and workplace Spanish courses to assist all Hy-Vee employees in communicating better. Hy-Vee’s Chariton facility is currently offering an apprenticeship for Indian Hills Community College students in diesel mechanic courses, with plans to add more internships and apprenticeships in the future. “Many of the college’s graduates stay in the area, and that’s very important to us, as our future growth depends on having a skilled local workforce with access to education and training opportunities,” Matt Ludwig, Hy-Vee’s executive vice president of supply chain, said in a prepared statement.
