Krause Group received the Architecture and Design award, while the Historic Vitalization award went to Des Moines Film and Rialto Theater. The winners will receive their awards at the American Institute of Architects Iowa Awards Celebration on Thursday at Mainframe Studios. Krause Group, under the leadership of founder and CEO Kyle Krause, has spearheaded multiple building projects across the Des Moines metro, most notably Krause Gateway Center, which was designed by Pritzker Prize Laureate Renzo Piano and OPN Architects. Des Moines Film, a local nonprofit directed by Ben Godar, embarked on a four-year journey to conceptualize, coordinate and secure $5 million in funding for the acquisition and restoration of the Varsity Theater, which closed in 2018 and reopened in December 2022. The Rialto Theater in Pocahontas, which first opened in 1939 but closed in the late 1980s after declining revenue, reopened in 1995 after the local community raised more than $200,000 for renovations and has remained open since for screenings, high school stage productions and other youth programs.
