Iowa families left an estimated $25 million in college financial aid on the table in the past year because they didn’t apply for aid, according to the Iowa College Access Network, which Wednesday announced a new campaign to get Iowans to complete the federal aid form. The initiative, FAFSA Ready Iowa, aims to increase the number of people completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Iowa currently has a FAFSA completion rate of 41 percent, compared with a national average of 55 percent. ICAN wants to increase the completion percentage to 70 percent by 2025. Currently ICAN operates nine student success centers statewide and assists with the completion of more than 6,000 FAFSA forms each year. The organization said it will begin supplementing this by working with more partners and volunteers to hold community- and school-based events to encourage a better understanding of financial aid and the importance of filing the FAFSA.
