Council members said they received dozens of emails and letters from both sides, but there was enough concern to make a change. Indianola resident Deb Schiel-Larson, who led the charge for changing the so-called “Indian head logo,” said the request was spurred by a conversation with friends. “Our Ojibwe friend said, ‘I’m not coming. I wouldn’t come. I’m not going to visit you in Indianola anymore,’ ” Schiel-Larson said. Use of Native American imagery is long-standing in Iowa and Indianola. Simpson College dropped the “Redmen” name from its sports teams in 1992.
