Here’s a cautionary tale for companies that think they may want to use AI-based algorithms to screen job candidates. According to this article from Reuters, Amazon last year had to scrap a sophisticated computer model it had developed to screen its job applicants’ resumes, after finding the program’s algorithm repeatedly discriminated against female candidates. It seems that the machine-learning system was trained to vet applicants by observing patterns in resumes that had been submitted to the company over a 10-year period. Because of the tech industry’s male dominance, most of the resumes were from men, which led the system to learn to favor men over women.
