Iowa Business Council members are slightly more optimistic about the next six months of economic activity.

A quarterly survey found the overall outlook index was 59, up two points from last quarter but one point lower than this time last year. The survey was completed in the second half of November.

In other results:
  • The fourth-quarter sales index was 66, seven points higher than last quarter and four points ahead of a year ago. Sixty percent of the CEOs expect increased sales over the next six months.
  • The capital spending index was 55, one point behind last quarter. Forty percent expect increased capital spending levels.
  • With an employment index of 56, respondents were divided between expecting higher employment and no change.
In a separate question, 60 percent of respondents indicated their companies’ total spending on state and federal regulatory compliance has increased substantially.
