Iowa City Council repeals rental permit moratorium

Iowa City Press-Citizen: The Iowa City Council lifted its nearly nine-month moratorium on issuing new rental permits in the city’s “core” neighborhoods via unanimous vote Tuesday evening. The moratorium was put in place in May 2019 and has blocked the issuance of any new rental permits. The City Council under the leadership of Mayor Jim Throgmorton wanted to see these areas maintain a mix of housing sources including owner-occupied homes, long-term rentals and Section 8 housing. But because of these neighborhoods’ proximity to the University of Iowa campus, the vast majority of new housing over the past decade has been rental.
