Iowa Department of Education releases draft social studies standards
Iowa students would see more emphasis on critical thinking skills needed to compete in the job market under new proposed social studies standards. The draft standards, released Tuesday by the Iowa Department of Education, outline what students should know and be able to do in social studies from kindergarten through 12th grade. The draft represents the first statewide effort to update the standards, which were adopted in 2008. A recent survey showed many Iowa teachers want clearer, more specific expectations than those outlined in the current social studies standards. The standards, which will now go through a public review process, would also incorporate Iowa history and financial literacy, which are not reflected in the current social studies standards.
