A poor first quarter forced Iowa to play catch-up for most of 2014, and the state’s economic growth was below the national average, the Wall Street Journal reported, based on U.S. Commerce Department Data. Just 16 states outperformed the nation’s 2.2 percent economic growth rate. North Dakota’s smallish $48 billion economy grew 6.3 percent to lead the nation. The four biggest state economies — in California, Texas, New York and Florida — grew between 2.5 percent and 5.2 percent. Iowa’s $152.5 billion economy grew 0.4 percent.
