Iowa soybean farmers doubt USDA crop projection

Leaders of the Iowa Soybean Association say they disagree with the latest federal projections for an even bigger than expected record soybean crop this year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture increased Iowa’s average soybean yield by one bushel per acre from last month to 61 bushels, the report said. That means a 3 percent increase in the production estimate, to 606 million bushels. Randy Miller of Lacona, a district leader in the soybean association, said persistent rains have hurt the quality of crops, and have kept harvest equipment out of many fields. Many farmers will have poorer yields while also facing lower than usual prices.
