The Iowa Supreme Court has approved more than $321,000 in grants to nonprofit programs that provide legal assistance to low-income Iowans with civil legal problems. The grants were funded by the Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Account program, which is supported by interest that is earned on certain pooled trust accounts that are held by Iowa lawyers. With this year’s grants, the Supreme Court has awarded nearly $23 million from the program since its inception on July 1, 1985, the court said in a news release. Greater Des Moines-based organizations that received funds were Iowa Legal Aid, $172,000 for two programs; Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, $37,400; Iowa State Bar Association, $340,465 for two programs; Drake University legal clinic, $10,400; Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, $4,050; Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, $4,400; and Iowa Justice For Our Neighbors, $5,000.
