Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 5.3 percent in July, Iowa Workforce Development announced today.

That is up from a rate of 5.1 percent in June, but down from the 6.0 percent unemployment rate in the same month a year ago.

The number of unemployed Iowans increased to 88,200 in July from 85,300 in June. The number of working Iowans decreased to 1,563,400 from 1,573,300.

“The July jobs report demonstrates a slow and fragile economic recovery,” said Teresa Wahlert, director of Iowa Workforce Development, in a press release. “Nonfarm jobs are 12,500 higher than they were one year ago despite the global slowdown that has occurred over the past three months.”

Health services jobs increased by 900 and trade and transportation jobs rose by 400. Private education jobs decreased by 1,000, construction jobs were down 1,200 and professional and business services jobs decreased by 800. Manufacturing jobs also went down by 600, but are still up by 10,400 from last July.

The national unemployment rate in July increased to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.
