IRS offers tax relief for reclassification of workers
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) yesterday launched a new program designed to enable many employers to resolve past worker classification issues and achieve certainty under the tax law at a low cost by reclassifying their workers.
The new Voluntary Classification Settlement Program will allow eligible employers to obtain relief from federal payroll taxes they may owe for past tax years by reclassifying “workers,” or people who may have been considered nonemployees or independent contractors, as “employees.”
The program is part of a larger “Fresh Start” initiative at the IRS to help taxpayers and businesses address tax responsibilities that may have been incorrectly handled in the past. For more information, click here.
