Describe your basic workout regimen.
I try to work out at least four times a week. In the summer, I run outside, and try to get in at least a couple of days in the gym with weights.
How have you changed that regimen over the years?
When I was younger, I ran more, faster and longer – not quite as much energy these days. Now I do more cross training on the Stairmaster or ellipse machine.
Do you set small goals and reward yourself for reaching them? How?
I do set goals, but no rewards. I also participate in the “exercise minutes” part of the Live Healthy Iowa challenge.
Do you work out with a partner or a group or alone? Why?
Often with a partner, because it is so much harder to skip the workout.
What motivates you to stay in shape?
I feel better physically, mentally and emotionally when I work out regularly.
What are the keys to your diet?
Just what we learned in eighth-grade health – eat lots of fruits and vegetables, eat in moderation, drink plenty of water.
What advice would you give to someone just starting on a workout program?
Pick some form of exercise that you like to do; try to work out with a partner; don’t expect immediate results.
Any fitness goals you’re working toward?
Just working out often to stay in shape.
