Kufuor, Lula da Silva named laureates for World Food Prize
John Agyekum Kufuor and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have been named the 2011 World Food Prize laureates.
Kufuor was the president of Ghana from 2001 to 2009 and implemented major economic and educational policies to increase that country’s quality and quantity of food. Ghana saw a reduction in its poverty rate from 51.7 percent in 1991 to 26.5 percent in 2008.
Lula da Silva served as the president of Brazil from 2003 to 2010. During his tenure, the number of Brazilians living in extreme poverty decreased from 12 percent in 2003 to 4.8 percent in 2009.
