Another downtown landmark is getting exterior lights. Crews from Kaas Electric Inc. of Ankeny and RDG Planning & Design of Des Moines are busy today installing dimmable LED lights on the facade of the historic St. Ambrose Cathedral at 607 High St. Most of the work was done earlier this summer, but today’s tasks involve drilling through 26 inches of limestone to mount lights along the bell tower via a 140-foot lift. The workers will try the system tonight, most likely setting it at 60 percent light so the details of the limestone facade will be visible, said Jim Kaas, owner of the electric business. The church was dedicated in 1891 and became a cathedral in 1911.
