Mainstreet index indicates growth
The Creighton University Rural Mainstreet Index in December reached its highest level since June 2007.
The index rose to 59.7 from 58.4 in November and 52.9 in October. Readings above 50 indicate growth.
Creighton economist Ernie Goss, one of the creators of the survey, said in a press release that the index is detecting a “very healthy Rural Mainstreet economy with the gap between urban and rural widening.”
In Iowa, the index advanced to 56.3 from 51.7 the previous month. The new hiring index in Iowa climbed to 54.1 in December from 52.5 in November.
The index covers 10 regional states, focusing on about 200 rural communities with an average population of 1,300. It is derived from a survey of bank CEO’s. Readings range from zero to 100.
