A Danish developer is planning to develop a major offshore wind energy project near Hawaii, Pacific Business News reported. The project, which would include more than 100 turbines, would be located in federal waters off Oahu’s northwest and southern coasts, according to a published report. Alpha Wind Energy has turned in a lease request to the U.S. Interior Department for two 51-turbine projects, which total 408 megawatts, according to Rechargenews.com. The project, located 17 miles south of Diamond Head, would be the first floating offshore wind farm in the United States. Thus far, there are no U.S. offshore wind farms up and running, although there are some projects under development on the East Coast and in the Great Lakes region.
