MercyOne, the Iowa-based regional health system that includes MercyOne-Des Moines, announced it reduced the cost of care by more than $10.3 million for Medicare-enrolled patients in 2018, and provided $5.2 million in payments through the Medicare Shared Savings Program to its participant organizations. The health system also improved the quality of care for its 72,000 Medicare patients, as measured by quality scores of its accountable care organizations (ACOs). “We are proud to showcase the leading quality MercyOne brings to the care of thousands of patients while also saving money for Medicare,” said Bob Ritz, president and CEO of MercyOne. “Our family of dedicated physicians, providers and health coaches are making real improvements in the health of the communities we serve.” MercyOne’s Population Health Services Organization manages the four ACOs, which reach across the state of Iowa. Last year, those ACOs achieved quality scores ranging from 94% to 98%, according to MercyOne, compared with a national average of 91%. MercyOne includes 18 owned or joint venture medical centers and hospital campuses, 26 affiliated medical centers, and more than 420 ambulatory care locations.
