235 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and Culture, Economic DevelopmentTwo-time World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Mia Hamm will be the headline speaker at the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s 2022 Annual Dinner. The dinner is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. Hamm, who scored 158 goals in international competition, helped the U.S. Women’s National Team to World Cup victories in 1991 and 1999, and Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2004. She was named FIFA’s Women’s World Player of the year in 2001 and 2002 and the U.S. Soccer Federation’s Female Athlete of the year five consecutive years from 1994 to 1998. In 1997 she created the Mia Hamm Foundation to raise funds for bone marrow research after her brother died from complications of aplastic anemia, a bone marrow disease. Hamm, who is retired from playing, is now co-owner of the Los Angeles FC, a minority owner of Angel City FC, a global ambassador of FC Barcelona and is on the board of directors of Serie A club A.S. Roma. “Hamm is an inspiration to millions of fans, and her influence as an international star transcends the sport,” said Fred Buie, 2021 board chair of the Partnership. The annual dinner is the business community’s celebration of the past year’s economic and community development successes, and an opportunity to look to the future of the region.
